Automation engineer VET

As an automation engineer, you will plan and build automated systems such as complex traffic control systems and traffic lights, drives and controls for trains and other vehicles, ticket machines and much more. You will program control systems and assemble, wire and inspect electrical and electronic components.

What we’re looking for

  • You have an interest in electronics, electrical engineering, automats and robots.
  • You think logically, have a good ability to combine ideas and are patient enough to solve complex tasks.
  • You have a great imagination and you like developing and implementing new solutions and plans.
  • You enjoy working with numbers and calculations. You liked maths and physics in school and you were good at them.
  • You also like working with your hands and want to see what you’ve done at the end of a working day.

How an automation engineer apprenticeship works

Every year, the BKW Group offers apprenticeships for federally certified (VET) automation engineers. During your apprenticeship, you will work on numerous interesting projects and help us automate the world. Here’s what your apprenticeship might look like day to day:

Duration: 4 years


Locations: workshop or a wide range of workplaces depending on construction site and project

Training days in 1st year of apprenticeship: 1 day a week

Training days from 2nd year on: 2 days every 2 weeks

External courses: 2–3 weeks per apprenticeship year

Other options: Federal Vocational Baccalaureate, apprenticeship & sport, Swiss Skills regional championships, first aid courses

As an automation engineer with a VET diploma, you have chosen trailblazing basic training which you can build on to further your development.

At BKW, we offer a wide range of options.

  • In most cases, you can continue working for the BKW Group if that’s what you want.
  • You can also sit for the Federal Vocational Baccalaureate or take on further education and reduce your workload to part-time.
  • Perhaps you have your eye on a higher position for which you need a degree (technical/vocational college or university of applied sciences)? We’ll help you work out how to get there.
